Date: Thu, 10 Sep 92 12:41:33 -0400 Colleagues The COsmic Background Explorer project at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center would like to distribute released data in FITS format from the National Space Science Data Center. Would our esteemed colleagues prefer to receive the data in BINTABLES or IMAGE format ? We have determined that IMAGE extensions are more effective than BINTABLES in terms of file size and data access time for our internal use. I would like to know how using the BINTABLE extension would take up any more space than any other convention. A priori, there doesn't seem to be any reason for this. Which FITS format to use I think should be driven by the format of the data themselves. If the data are are simple N-dimensional arrays, and if all the related descriptive information can easily be represented as keyword values, then using the IMAGE extension would seem most appropriate. If, on the otherhand, the data are more tabular or list structured, then the BINTABLE format would be more suitable. The BINTABLE format is also usually better suited for more complicated data structures which cannot be naturally represented as an N-dimensional array. -Bill Pence From wgas@Hypatia.gsfc.nasa.gov Fri Sep 11 12:23:28 1992 Status: RO X-VM-v5-Data: ([nil nil nil nil nil nil nil nil nil] ["1176" "Fri" "11" "September" "92" "12:21:06" "-0400" "Stephen Walton" "swalton@solaria.csun.edu " nil "27" "FITS on PClones: 1) display? 2) exabyte?" Date: Fri, 11 Sep 92 12:21:06 -0400 I have two related questions about FITS file on PClones, one general and one specific. The general one is: what software is out there for displaying them, esp. on a Super VGA in 256-color mode? Ideally, I'd like to find someone who's written a driver for PCVISTA, but I'd settle for a simple stand-alone program to do the trick. The specific one is: we now have an Exabyte 8200 attached to a SCSI Host Adaptor in one of our clones. Is there free software available which would allow us to read and write FITS files to this in a standard format? What do you all consider "standard", anyway? I have a lead on two packages, both from NovaStor Corp. NovaTAR will, as its name implies, read and write Unix tar format Exabyte tapes. TPU will allow labeled or unlabeled dumps of files to tape. My impression is that to allow full streaming mode, people are writing Exabyte FITS files blocked 28800 bytes to the tape record; is this accurate? When you reread them from tape, do you strip off trailing nulls to get the disk file back to the original size? Thanks in advance for any information. IMDISP will do the trick for you, (maybe, depending on which SVGA board you've got). It's available by anonymous FTP from ames.arc.nasa.gov - look in pub/SPACE/SOFTWARE for IMDISP78.EXE. I'm one of the authors, so feel free to direct questions/comments/fixes/etc to me. I've considered an interface to VISTA for some time but the version I saw was pretty primitive in how it handled FITS headers, and was awfully restrictive about file names and the like. OTOH, IMDISP doesn't handle floating point images all that well, either. Still, I'm real interested in seeing such an interface. Any other VISTA-holics on the list? -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Archie Warnock Internet: warnock@hypatia.gsfc.nasa.gov -- Hughes STX "Unix --- JCL For The 90s" -- NASA/GSFC
